The "Altars of Deaths": a PreColumbian tradition

On the occasion of the installation of the Altar of the Dead in the museum, a cycle of three talks will take us into the world of this PreColumbian tradition that has lasted until the current day:

  • THE ALTARS OF THE DEAD

The history will be explained of the costumes of the Day of the Dead of Mexico today, while at the same time will talk about the origins of this festivity and its protagonists. Given by Isabel Bargalló (Centre PreColumbian studies). Saturday 31st October 2009. 6pm.

  • FUNERAL COSTUMES BETWEEN THE MAYA AND AZTECS

A study will be presented of the ancient sources of Middle-America that they talk about, mainly that of the chronicle writers. And it will be by means of this that we find out what the main funeral rituals were. Given by Montserrat Bargalló (CEP). Tuesday 3rd November 2009. 7pm.

  • THE SKULL IN THE MIDDLE-AMERCAN WORLD

It will be explained how this symbol is present in many of the cultures of the cultures that make up the Middle-American past, commenting on the main examples provided mainly by archaeology, architecture, sculpture and pottery. Given by Victòria Solanilla (UAB/CEP). Thursday 5th November 2009. 7pm.
